It's Sumertime, Sumertime, Sum, Sum,
Summertime!
Welcome to June and the beginning of the
summer season. This is my absolute
favorite time of the year! Everything is
green in our area. The birds are
singing. The chipmunks are scurrying.
The days are long and the temperatures
are comfortable and warm. It's a time
filled with happy childhood memories of
counting down the days until school lets
out. It's a season filled with unending
possibilities and choice. I absolutely
light up with positive energy during
this season!
Every year, I have visions of how I will
devote my summer to make the livin' easy
and fun. I'll search for new trails to
hike, different streams to kayak, plan
lazy days at the beach or poolside, read
a ton of books, etc. etc. But then, of
course, real life seeps in to my vision.
Things like work and being productive.
Responsibilities abound; household,
family, you name it. And then, all of a
sudden, I find myself back on that
treadmill of life; with fun and leisure
-time thoughts getting lost under the
paperwork on my desk. Sound familiar?
I've decided that this summer is going
to be different! I've realized that if I
want to live easy and fun this summer, I
need to do some planning. As much as I
enjoy spur- of -the moment choices, I
also know that I don't always allow
those to happen. So now I've made a list
of the things I want to do for
summertime fun. I've even put them on my
calendar. Having them written down where
I can see them will make those plans
become reality for me. One thing that I
can already check off is a gathering
with just my dad and me. We recently
went to the Jersey shore for a multi-day
getaway. I do not remember the last time
we've done anything like this...if ever!
We talked, walked, laughed, ate
boardwalk food, and played like crazy!
(And rented a bike surrey one
morning-see photo above) It was a
wonderfully memorable time and a fun way
to kick off the Summer of 2009!
What about you? What will you do this
summer to have fun and make good
memories? An easy life sprinkled with a
healthy dose of fun is good for you;
good for your heart, your head, your
spirit, your blood pressure, and even
your relationship with others. I invite
you to do a little pre-planning and make
a list of some fun activities for these
summer months. What have you wanted to
do for a while that you keep putting on
the back burner? Maybe that solitary
trip to the beach? Or learning to sail,
rollerblade, or mountain bike? Perhaps
reconnect with an old friend who you
have not seen in a very long while? Once
you have your ideas in place, put your
plan into motion. Bring it on and make
yourself a memorable summer!

Challenge at the Trailhead
Don't just think about your summer fun.
Do something about it! Make a list of
at least 5 things you want to do this
summer that will really make you grin.
Do it this week! Then schedule each item
on your calendar and seriouslly make it
happen! Then enjoy your best summer
ever!
