Sacred Sundays
Welcome to October! It's a month of
transition here in the Northeast. It
started out sunny and in the 70's in the
early part of the month yet by the end
of last week, there were consistently
grey days filled with rain and even snow
in some areas....not so common for
mid-October. Looks like we might be
gearing up for an early, chilly winter!
It's all the more reason to get
intentional about some blissful
downtime. For many years, my Honeyman,
Robert and I have been paying homage to
what we call "Sacred Sundays". Although
"sacred" often refers to "religious
rites"; the words that describe our
Sacred Sundays are synonomous with terms
like "revered", "protected" , and
"untouchable". On our Sacred Sundays, we
devote the day to time together to relax
and decompress. Household chores,
errands, and all work-related activities
are put on hold that day. For us, it
also means a day devoid of other social
engagements. We make no plans ahead of
time. Instead, we decide that morning
how the day will unfold. it often looks
like this:
- Leisurely time for the Sunday paper
- A delicious breakfast prepared by
Robert; the breakfast chef,
extraordinairre
- Followed by an outdoor adventure
- With dinner at home; on the deck or
by fireside, depending upon the time of
year
On our Sacred Sundays, we iput aside the
things we "should" do and concentrate on the
things we "want" to do. Our favorite outdoor
activities will include things like kayaking
on a nearby lake or stream, hiking a
trail in our local Pine Barrens, or shooting
down to the Jersey shore for a walk on the
beach.
These Sacred Sundays are very important
to me, individually and to us, as a couple.
It gives us time to breathe, to reconnect,
and to refuel and re-energize for the
upcoming week.
What about you? Are you able to set
aside time during your busy week to
decompress and (at least for a bit) put
aside all "shoulds"? IIf you already do,
high fives to you!! Or, if you haven't
been intentional about this, how might
you begin to make it happen? Consider
setting aside consistent time to do
those things that will bring you
relaxation and enjoyment and have you
reconnect with those most important to
you. Then sit back and reap the
benefits!

Challenge at the Trailhead
Start small. Think about a day,
afternoon, or even a couple hours this
week or next that you could devote to
your own "sacred" time. Perhaps you will
want to make it alone- time for
yourself. Or maybe you want to include
your partner, a close friend, or other
family members. Your activities might
include outdoor recreation, a trip to a
local museum, or indoor pleasures like
a bowl of homemade popcorn and a vintage
film, an all-day cook-a thon, a
favorite board game or cards, or even a
simple read and a nap. For you, it may
be a spiritual pursuit of some kind.
Whatever you choose, start incorporating
it into you regular life and then make
it a weekly or bi-weekly habit. You'll
be so glad you did!
