"Climb Mountains, But Bring a Good Guide"
Welcome to the October issue of The Trailhead!
Each month, you will receive some practical tips on ideas such as eliminating stress, finding your passion, clearing clutter, and maybe even some travel tips and more. Also look for helpful resources including book titles and websites. In addition, don’t be surprised when you find a call to action. I am a coach, after all! I hope you find some useful tidbits. If you decide to take me up on one of the monthly challenges, email me and tell me about it. I would love to hear what you are up to! If you know someone that you think may find something of value in here, please forward this newsletter on. And remember…the adventure begins at the start of The Trailhead!

Just Do It
A dear friend of mine passed away last week after a year and a half battle with esophageal cancer (Thus the tardiness of this month’s newsletter). I had the honor and pleasure of working with Charlie for 16 years when he was the principal in the school where I taught. We became close friends and confidants and remained so long after he retired. Life was an exhilarating adventure for Charlie. He took on both the joys and challenges of life with equal positive gusto. Despite his health challenges in the last 20 months with surgery, radiation and chemo treatments, in between those down times, he made sure he was able to do the things he loved, such as hang out at the beach, travel, and spend quality time with his beloved family and friends. Charlie was always open to new ideas and new adventures. He was my mentor in guiding and reminding me to live life to its fullest.
So often we put off those things that bring us joy because we decide we have too many other things on our “to do” list. We resist making those fun and pleasurable items a priority. For those of you that have children, how many times has your child asked to you do something like play a game or take a bike ride together and you’ve declined at that moment because you were too busy? Or maybe you have a close friend or family member that has wanted to meet you for lunch or dinner but you have no time in your schedule. Maybe you absolutely LOVE to travel but you have convinced yourself that you have neither the time nor money for it.
Life seems to accelerate to a faster clip as we grow older. Our time grows shorter yet the list of promises we make to ourselves and to others grow longer. We say things like “When things settle down here, I’ll…” or “I’ll do that when the kids are older” or “When I have more time, money, energy, etc. ,I’ll…” You fill in the blanks.
The point is that we have limited time here on this amazing planet of ours and it seems to me that many of us have our priorities mixed up or reversed.
What about YOU? What are your moments of joy? When do you feel most happy, peaceful, and contented? What is happening that brings you that feeling? If you knew you were to die soon, what would you regret not having done in your life? I think Mark Twin hit the nail on the head when he said,
|
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So, throw of the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sail. Explore. Dream. Discover.” |

|
So, I say, don‘t delay! Go out and live your life to its absolute fullest. Bring those dreams up from the backburner and put them on the top of your list. Just Do it!
Challenge at the Trailhead:
Think about what pleasurable things you have been putting off because of time limitations. This month, or better yet, this week; say “Yes” to something you’ve wanted to do for a while. Make it something you WANT to do rather than something you SHOULD do. Let me know how you make out. I’d love to hear!
