"Climb Mountains, But Bring a Good Guide"
Welcome to the November issue of The Trailhead!
Each month, you will receive some practical tips on ideas such as eliminating stress, finding your passion, clearing clutter, and maybe even some travel tips and more. Also look for helpful resources including book titles and websites. In addition, don’t be surprised when you find a call to action. I am a coach, after all! I hope you find some useful tidbits. If you decide to take me up on one of the monthly challenges, email me and tell me about it. I would love to hear what you are up to! If you know someone that you think may find something of value in here, please forward this newsletter on. And remember…the adventure begins at the start of The Trailhead!

The Magic of Music
Just recently, I had an afternoon where I was feeling a little low on energy. I know I was a little sleep deprived as well as feeling fairly stuffed and bloated from overindulgences from the previous evening. My emotions at that moment were not all that positive, either. Overall, I was feeling pretty “blah”. However, that all changed in an instant when my unsuspecting husband who was in another room put on an Aretha Franklin CD. All of a sudden, I was off my feet, swaying and dancing to the music while belting out the tune “Respect”, along with Aretha. I was immediately uplifted and totally energized!
Have you ever found yourself sitting in a long traffic jam where you are only able to inch your car forward at 2 or 3 miles per hour? Then just when it seems like things might open up and you can start moving again, another driver cuts dangerously close in front of you and you’re back to slow-mo again. Your stress levels and blood pressure is building every second. Yet right when you think you might lose it, your favorite song comes on the radio. Without thinking, you crank up the volume and you start to sing. You’re likely tapping the steering wheel in time to the beat and maybe even dancing a little in the driver’s seat. Right then and there, your stresses of the day disappear (even if only for moment) and your blood pressure comes back to a normal level. THAT is the Magic of Music!
Music can have an amazing effect on us. Think of how the power of a lullaby can soothe an infant. There have been numerous studies on the healing power of music, from helping to focus children with attention challenges to lowering the anxiety level and blood pressure of folks undergoing various outpatient surgeries when given a tape player and headsets with their favorite type of music to listen to during the procedure. Music can be a major contributor to our psychological, physiological, and over-all well being. It lifts us up and restores our body, mind and spirit.
So, what about YOU? When was the last time you took some time to really listen to your favorite pieces of music? If music is not already a part of your daily life, my challenge to you is to reverse that and bring music back into your life…then let the magic take over!
Challenge at the Trailhead:
What kind of music really calls to YOU? Pay attention to the emotion it brings up for you…the stronger the emotion, the more powerful that piece is for you. Consider making a list of your favorite pieces of music, maybe purchasing those you do not have (or check them out at your local library) then crank up the stereo and let the magic begin!
