Hot Fun in the Summertime
Welcome to June…the month of sunny days and warm nights, filled with dreams and expectations for vacations coming soon in the days ahead. I don’t know about your part of the world, but where I live in Southern New Jersey, the recent days have been mostly cool, cloudy, and rainy with the sun only making occasional teasing appearances. My daily mantra has become “sun and warmth, sun and warmth, sun and warmth…ohhhhhmmmm.” I know those sunny days will return, so while I wait for better weather, I say it’s high time to start thinking about having some summer FUN!
When I’m in work mode (which seems to be more often than not, these days!), I know I have a tendency to let the fun factor slide a bit. I get so involved with what I’m doing work-wise that by the time I come up for air, the day has gone by…and sometimes even the week…and I realize I’ve missed out on some serious playtime!
What I have come to realize, however, is the absolute importance of having fun and play become a regular part of one’s life. Many save it just for holidays and vacations. Or we have it buried so deeply by being responsible adults that fun is just not who we are anymore. Yet I truly believe and embrace the idea that by bringing fun and joy back into our lives on a consistent basis, that it will help us live an even fuller life. As a result, we’ll live more “lightly” and probably even longer because we’ll have taken the necessary steps to start eliminating some of the stressors in our life. It has been proven that having fun is good for your head AND your heart. Plus, we’ll be a lot more attractive to those we hang around with!
When was the last time you really had some fun…when you laughed so hard, you cried, or you just grinned so broadly that it made you giggle? For me, it was a recent trip I took with my fabulously fun 14 year old niece, Amy. We went away together…just the two of us on an aunt/niece getaway. Our travels took us to The Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. Once there, we played endlessly on the water slides, explored the incredible surroundings, laughed like little kids, and talked long into the wee hours of the night…all like there was no tomorrow. We had a blast! Of course Amy and I did not need to go as far as the Bahamas to cavort. We’ve had some terrifically fun times locally, too. In fact, this fun thing doesn’t have to cost a cent. What about remembering the simple pleasures from childhood…like hooking a line and fishing for sunnies, or exploring the woods, or taking a bike ride? (Notice the outdoor trend here…that’s where I get MY fun) But what about YOU?
Think back to when you were a child. What did you do for fun that absorbed you completely? Playing board games? Collecting things? Reading? Playing dress-up? Did you like to play alone or with others? Did you love the outdoors or was it inside where you got your kicks? If you’re drawing a blank, ask a family member who might help you to recollect. Many of the things that brought you joy and happiness as a child are most likely still the same things that make you grin as an adult. I suggest that you make a mental note (or physical list) of at least 5-10 things that you would love to do this summer for fun. You might even want to hang that list up in a prominent place in your home or office as a reminder. Decide if you want to do those things alone or with others. Then go ahead and enlist you Play Partner(s)-your best friend, your partner, or your favorite fun-loving family member. And finally, get out there and bring on the frolicking merriment! You deserve it and you won’t regret it. Let the games begin!
